This week we are in Kathmandu. We flew here with Biman, the Bangladeshi airlines. The encouraging thing we've been told about Biman is that they are good at crash landings because they have done so many of them. The theory we were told is that if you are going to crash it's better to go with an airline that know how to do it well... Anyway we arrived safely so hopefully it's all bravado and talk!
As soon as we arrived in Kathmandu we could feel the difference to Dhaka, it felt much more free and friendly. The cars were still old and the driving a bit crazy, they still beep their horns a lot but not as much as Dhaka, and at least so far the traffic has moved - it doesn't take an hour to get one km! There's still some rubbish in the streets, but not anywhere near as much as Dhaka, and the streets don't smell of raw sewage (it's so nice!). There are not so many beggars and we don't get stared at. The women drive their own motorbikes here, whereas in Dhaka they only ride side-saddle on the back, and I don't have to wear an orna (scarf)! Hooray, Kathmandu is great! Of course it could be just the area we are staying in, but we are staying in the richest bit of Dhaka and there is sewage and beggars and staring. So at the moment Kathmandu is winning hands down!
Marc has been working this week and I've been on holiday, but he finishes today so we are going to try to find ourselves a trip outside of the city. There are so many tour companies it is pretty hard to pick one, but we have a recommendation so will give it a go...
