Some of the cows have sold for an amazing 8 lakh Taka (800,000) or 8000 GBP, which is similar to the UK price. These are superb specimens of the Asian cow, but when you consider a good wage here is around 25,000 Taka per annum the perspective changes. They decorate the animals nicely to sell them and it seems that almost everyone buys a cow or a goat and tethers it outside their house or block of flats. There was a nice sound of gentle bleating and lowing...until yesterday morning (28th Nov) when it turned to a scary noise incorporating a gurgling noise, then silence.
The animals were killed, gutted and butchered within the car parks beneath the flats and the front driveways of the houses with the blood and guts pushed into the streets. The poor washed the guts out in the dirt of the streets to get food for their families. Not much seems to go to waste as the hides were stacked high with the guts on rickshaws, sold to the tanneries and hungry.
The Qur'an says that the animals must be killed whilst speaking 'God is great, god is great, god is great'. The meat is then halal or allowed to be consumed by Muslims. It also states that the animals should be divided into three equal parts: one third given to your neighbours and relatives, one third to the poor and the rest for yourself.
