There's water and then there's water

We have three types of water into our new flat (which by the way is great).  We get 'dog-well' water which is ground water to flush the toilets. It is disgusting brown, smelly, oily water, almost as bad as not flushing at all!
We get tanker water delivered.  This is what comes out of the taps and showers.  It looks clean but isn't for drinking. We buy filtered water in 20 L bottles from the local shop which we drink.

Kathmandu has water shortages which causes no electricity (as it's hydropower) but also the ground water is polluted and not replenishing as fast as it's being used. We are trying to cut down our water usage.  Our shower water is solar heated, so it can take a while to run hot. We collect the cold shower water in a bucket, and use it to wash our hands and water the plants.  We put the plug in and don't run water down the sink and we also collect the soapy shower water and use it to flush the toilet - it's much nicer than the dog-well water, and re-uses water.

So we are trying to cut down our water usage. But this is how lots of the local people get their water:

You might be able to see that there is not much water coming out of the three fountain heads.
So we are very lucky to have running water in our house.  After reading a National Geographic article on world water shortages, I think we will try and keep up the water saving habits.
