Yesterday there was a big political demonstration in Kathmandu. The Maoists (Communists) recruited thousands of villagers to come to Kathmandu to protest against the goverment, if the current prime minister didn't resign from office then they would call indefinite general strikes in Nepal. The demonstration was apparently peaceful, but the prime minister didn't resign, so from today everything is shut. The Maoists force businesses to close and prevent cars and buses from running. All schools, government offices etc are shut.
Nepal often has strikes like this, but the bit that is concerning is the 'indefinte' part. We have been advised to stock up on food and water for at least a week. Although I just looked out the window and the shop across the road is open, so I don't think we will starve. Our flat is quite far from the main road so it's quieter here, I guess they decided it was worth opening, and hoping the Maoists don't come by.
